H.W. Brands to discuss life of Andrew Jackson April 20

 |

The Lipscomb University Landiss Series presents Dr. H.W. Brands in a presentation of “Andrew Jackson and the Birth of American Democracy” April 20. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Swang 108, on the campus, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville, Tenn. This event is free and open to the public.

H. W. Brands is the Dickson Allen Anderson Centennial Professor of History at the Unviersity of Texas at Austin . He writes about and teaches history in the broadest sense. His subjects have included Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Benjamin Franklin, as well as the California Gold Rush, the Texas Revolution, and the death of the Great Society. His book, The First American:The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a New York Times bestsellers. In his latest book, Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times, Brands uses his considerable narrative skills to bring to life a Jackson who was the hero of the common man, and the colorful military leader who changed the very nature of the presidency- a man of great strengths and human flaws. This is the first single-volume and full-length biography of Jackson in decades, and critics have acclaimed it a distinguished treatment certain to be the most authoritative and comprehensive account for some time to come. This magisterial portrait of our Tennessee leader promises to reshape our understanding of both the man and his era.
