Hutcheson Gallery 'Weight of Play' exhibit features work from local artists

As Nashville, Tennessee has continued to blossom into an art-centric city, Lipscomb University's John C. Hutcheson Gallery presents “The Weight of Play,” an art exhibit featuring work by local artists Amelia Briggs, director of the Nashville’s David Lusk Gallery; Douglas Degges, an artist and educator at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois; and Carri Jobe, co-director of the SeedSpace and Locate Arts; Jan. 22 through March 8.
"‘The Weight of Play’ exhibit is a chance for us to display an example of the amazing work being done by local artists,” said Cliff Tierney, chair of the Department of Visual Arts at Lipscomb. “Nashville's contemporary art scene is stronger than ever and this exhibit is our way to pay homage to that. We're excited and want to invite our community here and beyond to come take a peek."
An opening reception featuring Briggs, Degges and Jobe will be held on Monday, Jan. 22 from 6-8 p.m. in the Hutcheson Gallery, which is located in the John D. Hughes Center. This event is free and open to the public.
Jobe, who is the wife of Lipscomb University art adjunct professor Brian Jobe, says that although they take their work seriously, but not too seriously, “there is a common theme of approaching our work with a certain playfulness or lightheartedness coupled with a sense of gravity,” within the exhibit.
Located in the James D. Hughes Center at Lipscomb University, the John C. Hutcheson Gallery opened in fall of 2010. Curated by Lipscomb visual arts department faculty, the Hutcheson Gallery features a variety of exhibitions each semester. This gallery provides an opportunity to study, exhibit, stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement and artistic interests.
The Hutcheson Gallery is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, hours may vary during scheduled events. The Hutcheson Gallery is best accessible from the Belmont Boulevard entrances to campus.
