Hurt honored as top freshman in the A-Sun

As the No. 2 rebounding and scoring freshman center in the nation, Lipscomb men’s basketball big man Stephen Hurt has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference “Freshman of the Year” as announced by the league on March 5.

“Stephen has really just scratched the surface,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson.  “He is just now learning what he has to do to be a really, really good player. He’s had a very good freshman year and put up pretty good numbers but he still has a lot to learn.”

The Murfreesboro native has been a crucial part of the Bisons success this season averaging 11.8 points per game and hauling in 7.9 rebounds per game, a number that ranks third-best in the Atlantic Sun.  The redshirt-freshman has notched eight double-doubles this season, the most since Adnan Hodzic earned eight during his junior season in 2009-10.

The first Lipscomb player to garner “Freshman of the Year honors”, Hurt is often compared with Hodzic, who averaged 8.9 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per contest during his All-Freshman team campaign.

Following a 23-point, 18-rebound effort against Austin Peay, Hurt was named an ESPN.com “Top Performer” of the night.  Hurt also won the A-Sun “Crons Achiever of the Month” for December as the top performer in the Atlantic Sun as voted on by the fans.
