HOPE Scholarships increase for Fall 2006-07

 |

Gov. Phil Bredesen recently approved a $500 increase in HOPE scholarship amounts for high school students headed to college at Lipscomb University.

Tennessee students attending a four-year college this fall will receive $3,800, a $500 increase from last fall.

Students eligible for the HOPE scholarship are those who have been a Tennessee resident for at least one year as of Sept. 1, 2005. Students must apply for the scholarship within 16 months of high school graduation.

For detailed information on those eligible for the HOPE Scholarships, go to http://www.CollegePaysTn.com.

To renew a HOPE scholarship, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 after 24 semester hours, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 after 48 hours or more.

The new law also makes several changes to the loans and grants provided through the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship program:

• A new loan-scholarship program for advanced nursing degrees will offer a 25 percent credit for each year the nursing student agrees to teach in a Tennessee nursing school after graduation.
• Teachers seeking an advanced degree or certification in math or science can receive a $2,000 per year scholarship, up to $10,000 per recipient. Recipients must agree to teach math or science for two years in a Tennessee public school system for each year of the scholarship funding.
• The new law allows students attending private schools to obtain a Tennessee HOPE foster child tuition grant.
