This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Freedom Rides.  Author Ann Bausum, who writes about history for readers, age 10 and older, will speak on the subject of the Freedom Rides and discuss her new book “Freedom Riders - John Lewis and Jim Zwerg on the Front Lines of the Civil Rights Movement.”

Lipscomb’s Multicultural Association and the Student Multicultural Association are hosting the following events.

Feb 16 - Quiz Bowl at 6:30 p.m. in Swang 108, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville .
Teams for the quiz bowl will consist of combinations of students, faculty and staff.  Four teams, each with four members, will compete for a grand prize of $200 cash and a second place prize of $100 in gift cards, to be shared among the team.  This event is free and open to the public.

Feb. 24 - Talent Showcase at 7 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville .
The Talent Showcase is open to acts on and off campus with all genres being considered.  Participants will compete for $100, $75 and $50 prizes.  The event is open to the public.  Admission to the show is $3 with money going to Katrina victims.  Participants wanting to try out for the talent showcase need to sign up by Feb. 2.  Auditions will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Swang 102 on Feb. 2.  To sign up, call 615.279.6134.  People can also sign up at the time of audition.  Rehearsals will be held in Shamblin Theatre on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22, beginning at 7 p.m.
“The talent showcase is open to genres including, but not limited to African American music,” said Vicki Gaw, administrative assistant of the Multicultural Association at Lipscomb.  “Our hope is that people who may not normally come to Lipscomb will participate.  One of the best ways to promote Black History Month is to get to know new people and share with them what we know about African American history while also learning from them.”

Feb 27   Movie night at 6:30 p.m. in Shamblin Theatre.
This event is free and open only to Lipscomb students. This year’s movie will be "Amistad," starring Morgan Freeman, Nigel Hawthorne, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, David Paymer, Pete Postlethwaite and Stellan Skarsgard.  The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on a true story.  It is the saga of a failed mutiny on board a Spanish slave ship and the trial that followed. In the summer of 1839, 53 African captives broke free and took over the slave ship, Amistad. Captured off the eastern seaboard after failing in a desperate attempt to sail home, they find themselves at the mercy of the American judicial system.

Throughout the month, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Multicultural Association will also be sending quizzes through e-mail to students, faculty and staff to inform the Lipscomb community of important events in African American history while highlighting the cultural diversity located both on and off campus.  The Association will also be posting flyers and posters around campus, filled with information regarding Black History Month.

Other events are being planned throughout the year.  However, these are the planned events for the month of February.  For more information about any of these events or about the Multicultural Association at Lipscomb, contact Gaw at 615.279.6134 or by e-mailing vicki.gaw [at] lipscomb.edu.
