High school seniors get the college experience at Summer Scholars

From Friday, July 7 to Sunday, July 16, Lipscomb welcomed high school students from across the country onto campus to participate in the annual Summer Scholars program.  Run by the office of admissions, Summer Scholars is a 10-day residential academic program for rising high school seniors hosted yearly at Lipscomb University.

Before heading off to their full college experience as freshman next year, students accepted into the Summer Scholars program are eligible to come to Lipscomb and get a glimpse into college life. Selecting one of seven different courses—most of which fulfill college general education requirements—participants take a single three-credit hour class completely tuition free. Classes offered this summer covered subjects ranging from introductory communications to engineering.

In attendance this year were 63 students; approximately 54 percent of them were from Tennessee, with other students traveling from 16 different states, as well as two students coming from international locations. An ACT score of 24 is required to apply to the program, but participating students this year had an average ACT score of 28.

In addition to attending classes on campus, students also reside in Lipscomb’s dormitories for the 10-day program, giving participants the chance to not only earn college credit, but to also get a glimpse into college campus life. Students also have several opportunities meet and network with one another during the program, and will often eat meals together, have nightly devotionals in their dormitories and participate in a variety of fun activities.

The Summer Scholars program emphasizes experiential learning, so students also spent their 10 days exploring Lipscomb’s campus and visiting different Nashville attractions. Students this year participated in daytime outings like kayaking trips to Harpeth River, picnic lunches, and scavenger hunts, as well as fun evening trips where students attended a luau thrown by Lipscomb’s admissions team and traveled downtown to race each other in Go Karting. Students also participate in many different educational activities and field trips that are unique within their individual classes.

With a special luncheon closing ceremony, the 2017 Summer Scholars program concluded on Sunday, July 16. The application process for next years Summer Scholars will open Jan. 1, 2018 and will close on May 15, 2018.
