Lipscomb University’s Center for Global Connectedness and Collaboration presents Charles A. Elcan, CEO and co-founder of Chinaco Healthcare Corporation, in a special luncheon Dec. 6. The event also marks the launch of the Nashville Global Business Network.

The presentation is co-sponsored by Lipscomb’s Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership.

Elcan co-founded Chinaco Healthcare Corporation with Dr. Thomas F. Frist Jr. in May 2008. From October 2003 through April 2008, Elcan was executive vice president – Medical Office Properties for Health Care Property Investors. He has served as chief executive officer and president of MedCap Properties LLC, and was a founder and investor in Behavioral Healthcare Corporation (now Ardent Health Services). Elcan is involved in many nonprofit organizations in the Nashville area.

“Charles Elcan understands today’s global business environment. His work in developing healthcare facilities to serve the population in China is an example of how business continues to grow in its international scope and how collaboration with those in other parts of the world can make a difference in the lives of others,” said Mike Kendrick, director of the Center for Global Connectedness and Collaboration (CGCC), which is housed in Lipscomb’s College of Business.

Nashville’s Global Business Network is a signature program of the CGCC and is a result of work by graduate student Cristina O. Allen through the Andrews Institute’s master’s degree in civic leadership program. The organization is aimed at opening channels for those who wish to develop their international business knowledge, gain awareness of international business growth, meet area professionals from all over the world and learn about global business practices and customs through the network.

“There are so many silos in our community,” said Allen. “Nashville is growing rapidly in its international diversity. As the city grows it is essential that we intentionally maintain and foster relationships that will highlight the assets this diversity brings to business in this city.”

As a signature program of the CGCC, Allen said the Nashville Global Business Network will collaborate with the Nashville Chamber of Commerce International Business Council, Tennessee Diversity Consortium, many of Nashville’s diverse organizations such as the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Latin/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Asian American Professionals among others, as well as other global associations to advance the global leadership skills of individuals in the Nashville business community.

Nashville Global Business Network, housed at the Center for Global Connectedness and Collaboration, will offer professionals the opportunity to listen and network with global corporate businesses and speakers. Speakers and seminars will allow attendees to learn the secrets of success in foreign ventures, how to do global business, and understanding a global mindset.

“The Nashville Global Business Network is a good example of what we ask our Master's students to do--bring business, government and nonprofit leaders together to strengthen our community,” said Linda Schacht, executive director of the Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership.

Lipscomb’s College of Business launched the Center for Global Connectedness and Collaboration in October 2012 to develop global connectedness and collaboration between organizational business practices, educational research and the needs of business, academic and government communities in the Greater Nashville region. The center focuses on engaging the business community, teaching and research on the complexities of management of global organizations and the impact of global organizations on local and regional businesses. The center will work to develop understanding of the art and science of managing global organizations across diverse cultures with different economic, legal and political systems. The center is one of only 33 programs at universities and business schools in the world that offers the Global Mindset® Inventory for executives, academic institutions and government or nonprofit organizations.
