Any high school senior knows that selecting a college can easily become an overwhelming and intimidating process. Although campus visits are often a useful way to learn about university life, they can also be overwhelming. Spending hours on an unfamiliar campus trying to navigate from building to building, investigating programs and trying out dining options on their own, can quickly turn a college visit into a blur of stress.

Lipscomb University offers a different experience: 12 Lipscomb Fridays scheduled throughout the 2015-16 academic year, which include a campus tour, lunch at the Bison Café, sitting in on an actual class, meeting with a department of interest and touring the residence halls, all through the personalized lens of each student's interests.

“We know that students are looking for a community in which college feels more like a home-away-from-home, rather than just a school,” said Johnathan Akin, director of admissions. “Getting familiar with Lipscomb’s campus and meeting other students through a Lipscomb Friday event is the best way to discover if Lipscomb could be your new home.”

Although prospective students can schedule a campus visit on a day that best fits their schedules, a Lipscomb Friday is a convenient way to get the full Lipscomb experience without the stress. “The whole campus buys into Lipscomb Fridays,” said Akin. “Professors set aside time specifically to show off department facilities.”

“Not only can visitors spend more time touring a specific department, they also get an honest portrayal of a day at Lipscomb,” said Akin. Students attend classes alongside current university students as well as eat whatever is being served in the Bison Café that day. The admissions team works to give each visiting student the most accurate experience of a typical Lipscomb day, while also maximizing the limited time available during a visit.

“When students come on campus, we want them to experience our community,” Akin said. “We know our campus is beautiful and we know Nashville is an awesome city to live in, but it’s really our people here at Lipscomb who make us who we are.”

Since most potential students have only a few hours to fully experience Lipscomb while on campus, each Lipscomb Friday is filled with a variety of activities for visitors.

“We try to roll out the red carpet as far as accommodating students and letting them see and do the things on campus they want to do, but all in the context of it being a normal Friday,” said Akin.

Lipscomb Fridays are open to any prospective Lipscomb student as well as their families. The Lipscomb admissions team personalizes each visit so visitors can experience the aspects of the university that most relate to them. There are even a few events designed for specific audiences, including international student day on Oct. 14 and engineering day on Oct. 30.

“Visiting our campus is one of the most important things students need to do during the application and acceptance process,” explained Akin. “We would love for every student who applies to Lipscomb to come visit and spend some time on campus, and the best way for a potential student to experience a real day at Lipscomb University is by attending a Lipscomb Friday.”

Students who have toured Lipscomb, applied and have been accepted, should watch for a special invitation this spring to visit campus again at one of four specialized events.

“These events not only help accepted students see deeper into what Lipscomb can offer them through activities like a resource fair, but they show participants the city of Nashville, while also meeting other students,” said Akin.
