Lauren Harmon of Franklin and Jacob England of Winchester have been selected by Lipscomb University as a recipient of the annual Edscholar scholarship, underwritten by Edamerica, a student loan provider based in Knoxville.

Lipscomb presents two $7,000 recurring scholarships each year to high school seniors demonstrating academic achievement, high ACT scores, a demonstrated financial need and community service and leadership.

Harmon will graduate in May from Franklin High School in the top 10 percent of her class. She participates in the FHS Marching Band and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and in her spare time enjoys tennis and participating in activities at her church.

England is the valedictorian of the Class of 2007 at Franklin County High School, where he is also a member of the Beta Club and the National Honor Society. He is active in his church and has served as a volunteer at the local Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and at Wesley Preschool.

“The Edscholar program is a way to transform promising young Tennesseans into the leaders of their generation,” says Tommy Schumpert, Edscholar Program Director. Edamerica has provided funding for two scholarship recipients at each Tennessee college and university since 2004.

This year Lipscomb received 75 applications to become an Edscholar. Each applicant writes an essay and provides two letters of recommendation.

“We had a very strong batch of applicants this year, and the selection committee was very impressed with Jacob and Lauren’s accomplishments and integrity,” said Karita Waters, Lipscomb’s director of financial aid. “The level of dedication of the applicants to academics, their spiritual walk and community is truly inspiring. The committee would like to sincerely thank each student who applied.”
