Former Hezbollah hostage and negotiator speaks at Lipscomb

 |

Terry Waite, British humanitarian and former Hezbollah hostage, will speak at Lipscomb University’s first Regional Forum on Conflict Management on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The forum, which is open to the general public, is the first event coordinated by Lipscomb’s new Institute for Conflict Management, created this summer.

As a separate event, Waite will also provide the keynote address for the next Business Leadership Speaker Series luncheon, also open to the general public, on Sept. 19 at noon.

In January 1987, Waite was taken hostage by the Islamic Jihad, now called Hezbollah, in Beirut, Lebanon, and was held until November 1991, mostly in solitary confinement. Prior to that, in his function as advisor to the Archbishop of Canterbury, he had successfully negotiated the release of several Western hostages from Iran and Libya. At the two Lipscomb events, he will relate his experiences as a negotiator and hostage to the pressures faced by executives and managers today.
