Family is a priority not forgotten at Lipscomb University. That is why every year the university holds a special Family Weekend dedicated to giving students’ families a taste of college life at Lipscomb, as well as the chance to join in on the fun and get to know the faculty and administrators influencing their children’s lives. BBQ, music, cowboys and pancakes are just a few of the ingredients that make up the event-packed Family Weekend, Oct. 2-4.

This special weekend’s line-up of events is sure to keep everyone in the family busy. Families will have the opportunity to eat pancakes with Lipscomb Family Weekend 1 (provost)President L. Randolph Lowry, attend various receptions including an Italian-themed gathering at the home of Provost Craig Bledsoe, serve together in a Habitat for Humanity build project, run a 5K for a good cause and enjoy some country tunes at the Tau Phi Cowboy Show.

“Family Weekend provides my wife and I a variety of opportunities to see firsthand the places and people our daughters interact with on a daily basis,” said Steve Castleman, current Lipscomb parent and past Family Weekend attendee. “Knowing not only a professor’s name, but seeing their face; not just hearing a building name, but learning what happens there and getting to meet the friends my daughters have made and with whom they spend their time has been a highlight of the Family Weekends we have attended.”

In addition to mounds of food (Jim N’ Nicks’ barbecue, tailgating fare and Italian cuisine), families will be introduced to the academic programs and mission of Lipscomb University through a special lecture by Caleb Clanton, university research professor and associate professor of philosophy, on the Christian worldview and how it translates to Lipscomb’s mission. The provost reception will be an introduction to the university’s newest study abroad program in Florence, Italy.Family Weekend 3 (BBQ)

“We want to provide plenty of time for parents to be with their child but we also want them to do that socializing within the typical college atmosphere,” said Sonja Hayes, director of the Lipscomb Parents Program. “So families can attend their choice of student music concerts, serve with Habitat for Humanity together, participate in a 5k run or watch some football in the campus center.”

In order to benefit all families attending, we have worked hard to provide events that have minimal to no fees as well as transportation, Hayes said. Although not all events come with a cost, families should register for each event they plan to attend.
