Early Music Consort Sets Christmas concert Dec. 9

 |

The Lipscomb University Department of Music presents the Early Music Consort's Christmas Concert Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway. Admission is free. The performance is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend. The theme for the Early Music Consort's Christmas Concert is "Christmas Music from Hispanic Cultures." The concert will feature music from a number if countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Aztec and Inca cultures. Native percussion instruments are utilized in the performance including gourds, drums of different shapes and sizes, deer antlers and rattles. "When approaching music from this time and place, there is always a degree of uncertainty concerning performance practice. Most original sources often omit details such as tempos, specific instrumentation, ornamentation, dynamics, doubling, use of percussion, and optional chordal instruments such as guitar and harpsichord," said Dr. Gerald Moore, professor and director of the Early Music Consort. "One performer of early music recently said that performing music from the distant past 'is like cooking without a recipe.' Early music has much to offer the listener in the 21st Century; and even though we can never be certain that our renditions of the music are completely authentic, we strive to be true to the spirit of the music," Moore said.
