Dunn to speak at May 8 Commencement

Former Tennessee Gov. Winfield Dunn will be the featured speaker as Lipscomb University conducts Commencement exercises May 8 at 4 p.m. in the university's Allen Arena, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville.

More than 330 students are expected to participate in the ceremony.

President-emeritus Willard Collins will be presented an honorary doctorate during the occasion in recognition of more than 50 years of service to the university. Collins was president from 1977-86.

Dunn is chairman of the board of CHARACTER COUNTS! NASHVILLE, a non-profit organization providing a non-sectarian, common vocabulary that advocates character development for adults and children.

In 1970, Dunn became the first Republican governor elected in Tennessee in 50 years and is noted for creation of a statewide kindergarten program and the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Dunn joined the board of directors of Hospital Corporation of America in 1976 and served as its senior vice president for public affairs. He has held memberships on numerous boards and presidential commissions. He has been active locally with the Nashville Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Conference of Christians and Jews, Nashville Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, Executive Committee of United Way.

He has been chosen three times as Tennessee's "Man of the Year" by the state's editors, news directors and Chambers of Commerce heads. He holds degrees from the University of Mississippi, and The University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, as well as an honorary doctorate of jurisprudence from Soutwestern University of Memphis. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University.
