Seven winners in Lipscomb University's Concerto Competition will perform in concert April 5 at 8 p.m. in Lipscomb's Willard Collins Alumni Auditorium, 3901 Granny White Pike.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
The students will perform with an orchestra composed of musicians from the Nashville Symphony, and private instructors and students from the Lipscomb University Department of Music, said Dr. Jerome Reed, professor of music at Lipscomb.
Dr. Stephen L. Rhodes, professor of music at Lipscomb and conductor of the university's band programs, will conduct the orchestra, Reed said.
Eleven Lipscomb students auditioned Feb. 21 before a panel of judges composed of faculty from other universities, including Dr. Carol Nies, conductor of the MTSU orchestra; Dr. Melissa Rose, professor of collaborative piano at Vanderbilt; and Dr. Robert Gregg, conductor of the Belmont orchestra.
"The judges chose six of the ten audition performances to appear as soloists with the orchestra, although they noted that all ten could have been chosen if there were time on the program," Reed said.
The competition winners: Chris Brock, trombone, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn.; Matt Cline, trumpet, a senior from Valrico, Fla.; David Finney, piano, a junior from Dickson, Tenn.; Anamarie Hickman, piano, a sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska; Marcus Miller, a junior from Antioch, Tenn., and Carina Heim, a senior from Pavilion, N.Y., vocal duet; and Michael Rickleton, vocal, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C.
Lipscomb's Department of Music reinstituted its Concerto Competition this year to "provide outstanding students an opportunity to perform with an orchestra," Reed said.
