Dr. Greg Carnes, chair of the department of accountancy at Northern Illinois University, has been appointed dean of Lipscomb University’s College of Business, President Randy Lowry has announced. His appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2006.

“Greg Carnes will be a great asset to Lipscomb University’s College of Business as we seek to grow our program in the future. NIU’s programs are nationally recognized for excellence and his experience leading those programs will help strengthen Lipscomb’s already solid business program,” said Lowry.

Carnes joined the NIU accounting faculty in 1994 and was named chair of the department six years ago. A 1984 Lipscomb graduate, Carnes holds a master of science degree with a tax emphasis from the University of Memphis and a doctor of philosophy degree from Georgia State University. Prior to joining the NIU faculty, Carnes worked in public accounting with local and international accounting firms.

“I am very excited about returning to Lipscomb. Having been a student at Lipscomb, I understand Lipscomb’s values and the University’s commitment to provide an excellent environment for high-quality education. I also believe that there are tremendous growth opportunities for the College of Business and the University,” said Carnes.

“For the College of Business to reach its full potential and be recognized as a leader in faith based business education, we must have strong faculty who deliver dynamic programs to excellent students. “There has already been a great deal of work done to move us in the right direction towards meeting these goals. There have been many great faculty members who have given unselfishly of their time and lives to get the College of Business to the point it is today. They have provided a great foundation for us to build on and we intend to continue to develop better working relationships with the Middle Tennessee business community,” said Carnes.

“With the competition that we face today in business education, we must be able to show that we’re distinctive. It takes courage and vision to be distinctive and unique. We want to make sure that we deliver high quality programs that meet the needs of the business community and that also provide our students with the values, knowledge, and skills that they need to be successful.”

Dr. Susan Galbreath, interim dean of the College of Business since June 2004, said Carnes is a very-qualified choice to fill the role of dean.

“Dr. Carnes had experience and strength in all the areas we were looking for in a dean. He is an excellent teacher and has a strong research record. His leadership ability is evident in the national rankings and reputation of the NIU undergraduate and graduate accounting programs. With his Lipscomb background, Greg understands our Christian mission and he provides a great example for a faculty member to model,” said Galbreath.

Carnes’ major teaching and research interests are in the area of taxation. He specializes in partnership taxation and the taxation of compensation and benefits. He currently serves as president-elect for the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and is a board member of the Accounting Program Leadership Group, a section of the American Accounting Association. Carnes has also served in leadership roles with the Illinois Society of CPAs. He has been widely published in various academic and professional journals, and has provided tax training for several large accounting firms. He is also a contributing author of the textbook Federal Taxation and CPA Excel, an internet-based CPA Review program.

A native of Chattanooga, Carnes is married to the former Jan Ellis, who also attended Lipscomb University. They have two children, Kaitlin, a high school senior, and Benjamin, a 7th grader.
