In honor of Veterans Day 2017, Lipscomb’s Campus Veterans Organization will host a series of events, Nov. 6-10, that honor the service and appreciate the sacrifices of those who have bravely fought in the United States Armed Forces, including Lipscomb’s student-veteran population.

“These events will serve as a way to appreciate all veterans for their service and help to better bridge the gap that exists between traditional students and its veteran students,” said Charlie Smith, president of the LCVO.

Lipscomb’s community will have the chance to see, hear and ask things they’d likely never be able to unless they were to serve in the armed forces, Smith continued.

On Monday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m., the LCVO will hold an Armed Services wreath-laying ceremony that will honor each of the four branches of military with each respective services’ own individualized wreath placed on each side of the fountain in Bison Square.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at The Gathering, Bryan Flanery, director of engagement at REBOOT Combat Recovery; and Rich Greenwald, U.S. Army veteran; will share their stories of transition from military to civilian life and how their experiences fostered the beginning of a life-long friendship here at Lipscomb.

The Campus Ministry Office will also host “This Is A Veteran” featuring Flanery and Greenwald on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in room 102 of the Swang Business Center. During this event students will be able to hear a more in-depth account of Flanery and Greenwald’s story of friendship as well as ask any additional questions they were unable to ask at the Gathering chapel service.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, students will have another opportunity to hear from and engage with veterans inside of Zebi’s Lounge, which is located in Lipscomb’s Bennett Campus Center. The event will feature Deana Tucker Savely, a social work major and treasurer of the LCVO, who will share her testimony as a Christian woman who served in United States Navy. Savely and other student-veterans will also participate in a question and answer session during the event.

To celebrate the United States Marine Corps’ 242nd birthday on Friday Nov.10, the LCVO will host a Marine Corps Cake Cutting Ceremony at noon in the Hall of Fame room, which is located in Allen Arena. The Lipscomb community is invited to attend the ceremony and enjoy light refreshments.

All events are free and open to all Lipscomb students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Lipscomb’s CVO is a student-led, campus chapter of the Student Veterans of America national chapter. Open to all students, alumni, faculty and staff, the chapter serves a voice and working body for veterans on the Lipscomb University campus. The CVO also provides recreational and educational opportunities as well as a support network for participants to better achieve educational and career goals, help raise awareness, provide selfless service to the local community through volunteer work, and act as leaders on- and off-campus.
