Campus revs up for Battle of the Boulevard

Janel Shoun |

Students will be participating in three spirit-building activities on Thursday and Friday before the Lipscomb Bisons play the Belmont Bruins on Friday, Feb. 9.

Bison City

Thursday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m. to Friday 3 p.m., in front of Allen Arena

More than 100 students are expected to begin pitching tents Thursday in front of Allen Arena to spend the night before the game outside in the biting cold. “It’s like a huge unorganized party,” said David Clayton, Lipscomb campus minister and event coordinator. Everything from s’mores to impromptu pep rallies will get students’ blood pumping for the Battle of the Boulevard on Friday.

According to Accuweather.com, Thursday night’s low will be 20 degrees, but Lipscomb students will have crowded tents and plenty of school spirit to keep them warm, Clayton said.

Running of the Bisons

Thursday, Feb. 8, 10:30 p.m. in front of Allen Arena

More than 300 students will meet to participate in the Running of the Bisons. Dressed in purple and gold, the students will run (and scream heartily) through the surrounding neighborhood campus.

Students have been asked to bring noisemakers, so if Lipscomb’s neighbors hear a ruckus around 10:30 p.m., it’s just the Running of the Bisons.

Copper Chef

Friday, Feb. 9, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Lipscomb Dining Hall in the Student Center

The Copper Chef competition is a battle inspired by the Iron Chef competitions featured on the Food Channel. Lipscomb Executive Chef Michael Sullivan and Belmont Executive Chef Kevin Dorr will compete to produce the most and best-tasting dishes using two mystery ingredients within an hour’s time.

The chefs will cook out in the public eye. Music, the school mascots and giveaway announcements will entertain the students, faculty, staff and guests from Belmont as the chefs whip up their concoctions. Past mystery ingredients have included the likes of mangos, chorizo sausage, Twinkies and Nerds candies.

Battle of the Boulevard: Lipscomb vs. Belmont

Friday, Feb. 9, 6:30 p.m. Allen Arena

The Bisons defeated their arch-rival 55-50 on Jan. 12 at Belmont’s Curb Center, setting up high expectations for the second half of the Battle of the Boulevard Friday at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena.

Only a limited number of standing room tickets will be available on Friday night.
