Brown appointed Multicultural Recruiting Coordinator

 |

1832Lipscomb University has appointed James Brown to the position of senior admissions counselor and multicultural recruiting coordinator for the Admissions Office, President Steve Flatt has announced. Flatt said the promotion grew from the university's desire to place a greater emphasis on recruiting multicultural students and create a more diverse campus. "James's appointment to this position is both a reward for his hard work and a statement of what we want to accomplish as a university. He has done an excellent job for us in Admissions, and we believe this new position will allow him to help us enhance the diversity of the student body and improve the overall educational experience at Lipscomb," Flatt said. "Today's world is a global community. Only through interacting with people of other cultures, learning to respect them and gaining wisdom from their experiences and heritage, can today's students be truly prepared for leadership and service. We believe that God created all mankind, and that embracing multiple cultures is an integral part of our mission as a distinctively Christian university," he said. Brown said he plans to actively recruit multicultural students and build relationships with churches in the region. He also plans to examine more financial aid opportunities for multicultural students, who now automatically receive a $2,000 scholarship in addition to other aid they may receive. "It's going to take time to build these relationships. We won't see a change over night. It will take a lot of time and work. But I'm hopeful and I'm excited to be here and to be able to be a part of this. I think this effort will give everyone a new sense about Lipscomb. We want them to know we're serious about getting multicultural students here and keeping them here," Brown said. Brown's appointment is the latest in a series of strategic decisions aimed at enhancing ethnic diversity on campus since Flatt became president in 1997. The offices of Multicultural Affairs and International Students were created, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is now a university-wide holiday, Black History Month is observed, and the annual International Square Fair was established. Brown, a Lawrenceburg, Tenn., native, graduated from Lipscomb University with a bachelor's degree in family relations and consumer science in 1996 and joined the Admissions staff in 1998. In addition to recruiting programs, Brown will work closely with Melodie Miller, director of multicultural affairs, on initiatives for the campus community and alumni.
