The Bisons got a pleasant surprise on Tuesday, as right-hander, Mike Zenko made his first start in a Lipscomb uniform in the Bisons 5-4 win over Samford University.

Zenko, who has missed his first two seasons at Lipscomb due to injury, gave a solid performance, allowing two earned runs on four hits over four innings.

The Bisons pulled out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Caleb Joseph. The Bulldogs tied it with a run in the second, and took the lead on another in the third.

After the Bisons tied the game on an RBI sacrifice fly by Allen Bolden in the fifth, they took the lead with three in the seventh. Ben Williams and Jorge Gutierrez hit back to back singles to lead off the inning. One out later, Joseph picked up his second RBI of the day on a single to left center. After Shane Simpkins laid down a sacrifice bunt putting runners on second and third with two outs, Ryan Wilkins singled to left, plating two more runs and giving the Bisons a 5-2 lead.

Samford got to reliever, Taylor Merry in the bottom of the innings, striking for two runs, only one of which was earned, cutting the Bisons lead to one, and bringing the score to 5-4, the final.

Brandon McClurg pitched the final inning for the Bisons, preserving the lead, and earning his first save of the season. Right-hander, Taylor Merry was credited with the win, giving up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The Bisons are back in action when they take on rival Belmont in a three game weekend series, kicking off on Friday.
