Ann Bausum to present "Freedom Riders," Feb. 13, book signing to follow

 |

Lipscomb University is hosting "Freedom Ride Journeys - An Author's Story of Research and History" with Ann Bausum on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in Ward Lecture Auditorium on the university's campus, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville. The event is free and open to the public.

Author Ann Bausum, who writes about U.S. history for readers, age 10 and older, will speak on the subject of the Freedom Rides and discuss her new book "Freedom Riders - John Lewis and Jim Zwerg on the Front Lines of the Civil Rights Movement."

Bausum will present information about the 1961 Freedom Rides, which serve as the subject of her new book. She will also talk about the process of her research, her 4,000-mile journey along the routes of the Freedom Rides and about meeting and interviewing Congressman John Lewis and Jim Zwerg. She will use audiovisual illustrations to accompany her discussion. A book signing will take place following her presentation.

"We are honored to have Ann Bausum speak at our campus this February," said Richard Goode, associate professor of history and chair of the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy at Lipscomb University. "With this being the 45th anniversary of the Freedom Rides and because they were such history making events with many Nashville residents participating to shape the course of U.S. History, it is particularly timely and important that we offer this presentation.

"The story is an inspiring one, of younger generations challenging the leaders of the civil rights movement to carry out plans many thought impossible and to pull off what many said could never be done. We hope that hearing their story will inspire us all in our own engagement in history, both in the present and in the future."

Bausum's presentation at Lipscomb will expand on a program being offered Feb. 11 at the Nashville public library, welcoming home activists who helped lead the 1961 Freedom Rides including Congressman John Lewis and Jim Zwerg, according to the library's website.
