American pianist Paul Barnes to perform at Lipscomb this Friday

Lipscomb University’s School of Music presents “New Generations: The New Etudes Of Philip Glass and Music of the Next Generation,” a concert featuring American pianist Paul Barnes, Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Lipscomb’s Ward Hall. This show is free and open to the public.

As part of the Faculty & Friends Concert Series, this performance will mark the release of Barnes’ twelfth studio album, New Generations, featuring the etudes of Philip Glass and music of the next generation, including a piece composed by Lipscomb alumnus N. Lincoln Hanks.

A champion of new music, Barnes celebrates 20 years of collaboration with Glass. The sonic result is a breath-taking panorama of the energetic and expressive landscape that is 21st century piano. 

The album was produced by Glass’ label, Orange Mountain Music, and features works composed by Hanks, Lucas Floyd, Jason Bahr, Ivan Moody, Zack Stanton and Jonah Gallagher

A specialist in contemporary compositions for the piano known for great technique and musicality, Barnes has been described by American Record Guide as “a reflective and musical pianist who pays attention to every note in Glass’s music and makes it speak.”

Praised by the New York Times for his “Lisztian thunder and deft fluidity,” and by the San Francisco Chronicle as “ferociously virtuosic,” Barnes has been featured four times on APM’s Performance Today and on the cover of Clavier Magazine, and his recordings are broadcast worldwide.

Barnes has performed in England, China, Korea, Taiwan, Austria, Russia, Greece, Italy, Serbia, and Hungary as well as in all major cities throughout the U.S.
