LA London_groupTwenty-two Lipscomb Academy graduates who plan to continue their education at Lipscomb University in the fall were given an opportunity to travel abroad in London, England, a trip that is extremely unique. The fifth annual “Lipscomb to London” trip from May 20-28 offered students a historic and fast-paced adventure as leaders introduced them to the possible challenges and rewarding experiences of life in college.

The trip was led by Lipscomb University President L. Randolph Lowry and his wife Rhonda Lowry, as well as Lipscomb University’s Chairman of the Board David Scobey and his wife Debbie Scobey.

After his fifth year leading the trip, Lowry understands the potential challenges that come with the transition from the campus school to the university and encourages students to thrive academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally by investing in them for a week in an environment that they are excited to learn.

“We want our academy graduates to know that although they are coming across the parking lot to begin their college education, that our vision far exceeds simply Nashville, Tennessee,” Lowry said. “We believe that the world is our campus and to be able to experience England, a country that is thriving with some of the most brilliant men and women, allows our future students to dream big and know that we are coming along side them on this journey.”

Trip highlights include:

  • LA London_lowry wigVisiting Oxford - Students had the opportunity to experience their first college lecture on the life of author C.S. Lewis at Oxford University, with world-renowned apologist and theologian Alister McGrath.
  • Terry Waite’s Lecture - British humanitarian, former Hezbollah hostage and a former scholar-in-residence at Lipscomb’s Institute for Conflict Management, spoke to the students about his captivity and challenged them to become peacemakers.
  • Colleen Graffy’s Lecture – former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Middle Temple Barrister gave an insightful lecture on the differences between the U.S. & British system of government.  The purpose, history and tradition of the Barrister and Judges’ wigs still in use today left an unforgettable impression on all.
  • Biblical Archeology tour of the British Museum - Examining the archeological evidence found in the British Museum strengthened confidence in the biblical record.
