500 students head out to charities all over Nashville for sixth annual Service Day

Lipscomb University’s classrooms will sit empty Friday, April 11, as hundreds of students take part in a different kind of learning -- volunteerism.

About 500 students will hit the streets instead of hitting the books from 1-4 p.m., Friday, April 11, planting flowers, playing with kids, hosting a basketball clinic, painting, weeding, cleaning and much more at local nonprofits all over town such as DuPont Hadley Middle School in Old Hickory, Feed America First and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Ten public schools will get a face-lift to fences around playgrounds and football fields thanks to the 200 students who will head out to Antioch, Joelton, Goodlettsville, Donelson and other schools around the city. This is the second year Lipscomb University has partnered with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools to provide a workforce for needed projects such as painting and cleaning.

For the past six years Lipscomb’s Service Day has sent students all over the Greater Nashville area to serve organizations like AGAPE, the Monroe-Harding Children’s Home and Habitat for Humanity. Painting bleachers, sorting clothes and assembling picnic tables are among the activities on tap for this year.

In just six years, Lipscomb’s Service Day participation has grown from around 50 students to around 500 this year. The event has already made a major impact on the lives of Lipscomb students. This year, students could preview the proposed projects and volunteer online. Service Day concludes with on-campus dinner and concert for all student participants and faculty/staff sponsors.
