Janel Shoun |

Are you a political junkie? Then you need to know about China. Perhaps you are considering declaring economics as your major. Then you need to know about China. Do you feel a call to evangelize? Then you need to know about China.

For anyone interested in learning about the politics, economics and culture of China, the “Why China Matters” information session hosted by the College of Business on Monday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. in Ezell 363 is the place you need to be.

Dr. Ming Wang, director of the Wang Vision Institute and international president of the Shanghai Aier Eye Hospital in China, will give a free lecture and the College of Business will award as door prizes two $2,500 scholarships to the 2009 China Experience, the college’s annual study abroad opportunity in China, next held May 20-30, 2009.

At the Oct. 13 event, one trip scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate (junior or senior) and one to a graduate student. (Details on how to be eligible for the door prizes can be found below.)

During his lecture, “China: The Sleeping Giant Has Awoken,” Wang will discuss the history of China, the nation’s explosive economic development since 1989, and its present status as a world power in trade and commerce. He will share his experience of helping build the largest private eye hospital group in China today, the Aier Eye Hospital Group, often referred to as the “HCA of China.”

Wang, a graduate of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the founding president of the Tennessee Chinese Chamber of Commerce, which works to continue Tennessee’s growth in exports to China, an emerging leader in the global economic, cultural and political landscape.
