Join the Lifelong Learning program on Friday, Oct. 23, for “The Life and Stories of an SEC Official” featuring Greg Thomas (’86), a former college football official in the Southeastern Conference. The event takes place at Longview Mansion, 811 Caldwell Lane in Nashville.
After 28 years as a college official, Greg Thomas spent his final 20 seasons in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as a Field Judge, bringing a seasoned eye and unique perspective to some of college football’s most exciting moments. Following in the footsteps of their father, Ted Thomas, Greg and his brother Lane Thomas (’83) share a rare family connection to officiating and a behind-the-scenes view few fans ever experience.
Thomas' officiating career included assignments in 15 postseason bowl games, four SEC Championship games and a College Football Playoff Semifinal Game—experiences that sharpened his ability to lead under pressure, make sound decisions in real time and maintain trust in fast-paced environments. Thomas retired from officiating in 2021, but the lessons he learned on the gridiron continue to shape his approach to leadership, teamwork and personal growth. Join us for an entertaining, enlightening, and educational afternoon of stories, insights, and anecdotes from life on the gridiron—seen from a different angle: behind the stripes.
