Gallery as Studio as Model: An Exhibition by Mandy Rogers Horton
Thursday, September 4, 2025 5:00 PM-Friday, October 3, 2025 7:00 PM
John C. Hutcheson Gallery at Beaman Library

Gallery as Studio as Model, an exhibition by Nashville-based artist and educator Mandy Rogers Horton, investigates the shifting roles of the studio, gallery, and model—challenging default notions and reconnecting each to the other in dynamic, unexpected ways.
During a nine-month residency at Arcade Arts, Rogers Horton inhabited a studio that was both
workspace and exhibition site, a place where private making and public engagement overlapped. In this hybrid setting, boundaries between exploring, making, and viewing became fluid, allowing these processes which are often separated to shape each other.
The exhibition features more than twenty architectural models of the artist’s residency studio,
each exploring a different conception of what a studio is or can be. The largest model, measuring 12 feet square, will be activated as a working studio for the duration of the show. Senior student Hope Kise will serve as Artist-in-Residence, raising the question: at what point does a model become real?
Interwoven with the models are text-based works—clusters of evocative words and phrases—
that invite visitors to reflect on the tensions inherent in art spaces and creative practice at large.
By embracing the fluidity between the roles of studio, gallery, and model, the exhibition
encourages adaptability, experimentation, and critical thinking across spaces and practices.
