Tracy K. Smith, Tobias Wolff among free keynote sessions at 2018 Christian Scholars' Conference

Lipscomb University’s 2018 Thomas H. Olbricht Christian Scholars’ Conference set for June 6-8 is offering several free keynote sessions that are open to the public. 2017-2018 U.S. Poet Laureate and 2011 Pulitzer winner Tracy K. Smith is among those featured in the sessions.
The free plenary sessions include:
Wednesday, June 6
• 4:30 p.m., Collins Alumni Auditorium
Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, professor and chair of the Temple University department of African American Studies. Speaking on “The Divine Moment in the Discovery of Maat: Social and Cultural Justice as Marks of Spirituality.”
Asante has published 77 books, among the most recent are “The Dramatic Genius of Charles Fuller,” “African American Traditions,” “Facing South to Africa” and “As I Run Toward Africa.”
Thursday, June 7
• 10:45 a.m., Collins Alumni Auditorium
Tracy K. Smith, 2017-2018 U.S. Poet Laureate and 2011 Pulitzer winner and professor of humanities and director of the creative writing program at Princeton University. Speaking on “Metaphor, History, Myth and Belief.”
• 4 p.m., Stowe Hall in the Swang Business Center
Cilliers Breytenbach, professor for the literature, history and religion of Early Christianity at the Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin. Speaking on “Christianity and Philosophy in Athens.”
Friday, June 8
• 10:45 a.m., Collins Alumni Auditorium
Tobias Wolff, author and the Ward W. And Priscilla B. Woods Professor of English, Emeritus, Stanford University. Speaking on “The View from the Bottom of the Well.”
Wolff’s books include “This Boy’s Life” and “In Pharaoh’s Army: Memories of the Lost War” among numerous others. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2015 he received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama.
No registration is required to attend the keynote presentations. They are free and open to the public.
More than 500 scholars will come to Lipscomb campus for the 2018 Thomas H. Olbricht Christian Scholars’ Conference as they listen to speakers, panel discussions and paper presentations based on this year’s theme, “Discovery: The Challenge of Emergent Truth.”
