Theta Psi, Kappa Chi named Lipscomb's Greek Life Club of the Year

Lacey Klotz |

Greek Life at Lipscomb University exists to create God-honoring relationships, develop student leaders, promote on-campus student involvement and serve the surrounding Nashville community. There are 13 student social clubs represented on Lipscomb’s campus. Each year clubs are asked to submit a year’s recap of activities to set apart the men and women’s clubs deserving of the title “Greek Life Club of the Year.”

Each club submitted a video that tells the story of the club’s fulfillment of the Greek Life expectations and definition, during the 2014-2015 school year.

Kappa Chi, a women’s social club founded in November of 1967, currently has eight active members, and is almost four times smaller than the other Kappa Chi_Large1six women clubs on campus. Though Kappa Chi may be small, their heart and character set them apart in the judges’ eyes, and they were crowned Greek Life Club of the Year.

Melissa Pinhal, Kappa Chi’s former president and recent graduate of Lipscomb’s College of Education, was elated to have been honored Greek Life Club of the Year, and emphasized that all clubs were very deserving of this honor.

“Each club believes in sisterhood or brotherhood,” Pinhal said. “We all have traditions and a deep love for Christ, and I'm really glad that we all have those things in common. I think Kappa Chi's determination, commitment and ingenuity set us apart this year.”

In their video submission, Kappa Chi captivated the hearts of judges by using one member’s life-altering story of being hit by a drunk driver. This experience generated the idea for club members to partner with the Metro Nashville Police Department Kappa Chi 2_ Large2to set up an obstacle course on campus allowing Lipscomb students to drive a golf cart while wearing impairment vision goggles. Over 200 students were educated on the risks of drunk driving through the simulation exercise.

Kappa Chi was also the first social club to serve on a mission trip as a team. This past May, the women of Kappa Chi spent a week in the Dominican Republic where they served 30 women and over 600 children in Navarrete, San Francisco, Esperanza, Cabirmal, Ponton, Imbert, Colegio, Campamento, Pastors and Las Guaranas. This experience is one they plan to continue in future years and encourage other clubs on campus to do so as well.

Winning the male club honor was a fairly new club on campus, Theta Psi, founded in 2012. With 50 active members this spring, these men have made a big impact in just a short amount of time.Theta Psi 2_Large2

Theta Psi used its position as a new club and made it an opportunity for their video submission. They used a creative model for their video where one member from each generation of the club answered one of the four questions of why their club should be considered for this honor. The Theta Psi men stressed that because they are new and do not have many concrete traditions, they are able to have a focus on others and to grow their brotherhood with a vision of service.

Theta Psi’s former President Zach Bowen, who graduated in May with a B.A. in graphic design, was one of the original founders of Theta Psi. He explained how far the club has come in such a short time and how honored he and his brothers were to have received this award.

“As a group, we strive to be a positive force to our campus as much as we do to the guys in the club,” Bowen said. “Through activities like Full Moon Theta Psi_Large1Fest and Relay for Life, we were able to engage our campus in both fun and meaningful ways.

“We often consider how we'll impact the rest of the Lipscomb community when we plan our New Member Orientation Week activities. And I think that sets us apart; we want to be in the thick of what's happening at Lipscomb. It's a community we love, and we're happy to be able to give back.”
