Lipscomb's Lifelong Learning Program Session II offers double dose of Revolutionary War studies
|
Lipscomb's Lifelong Learning Program kicks off its second session Oct. 17 with a double offering in Revolutionary War studies. On Mondays, Dr. Tim Johnson, chair of the history department and professor of history at Lipscomb, will teach Give Me Liberty!: The Revolutionary War. The class will consist of a survey of major events in the Revolutionary War time period, beginning in 1763 - tracing the events leading up to the war - and ending in 1783 with the treaty of Paris.
On Tuesdays in Revolutionary War Literature, Dr. Dennis Loyd, retired professor of English at Lipscomb, will present pieces of literature that inspired the American Revolution.
"We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer these classes back to back," said Patty Dugger, program director. "Participants will be able to trace the history of the Revolutionary War as told by an extremely knowledgeable history professor while also learning about the literature that inspired it from an equally knowledgeable former English professor. Anyone wanting to learn more about this important time in American history should not miss out on this duo."
Other courses to be offered during Fall Session II, which will be held Oct. 17 - Nov. 18, and their instructors: The David I Never Knew, Dr. Rodney Cloud, retired professor of Bible and Hebrew at Lipscomb; Holiday Floral Design, Dr. Randy Bouldin, professor of mathematics at Lipscomb and Computer II, Becky Tallon, professor of physics and engineering science at Lipscomb.
The Lifelong Learning Program offers people of retirement and semi-retirement age an opportunity to expand knowledge and explore new ideas in an informal, noncompetitive environment, according to Patty Dugger, program director. Learning occurs in a pleasant social atmosphere in classes with one's peers. There are no exams and no grades or credits. No previous education is required. Rather, the opportunity exists to interact with friends old and new.
The cost is $50 per person for one class. Individuals may take two classes during the same session for $75. For two people living at the same address enrolled for classes, the cost is $75 for the two. Some classes may require the purchase of a textbook. All suggested and required textbooks may be purchased in the university bookstore or at registration.
