Lipscomb lights up for Christmas season 2006

Janel Shoun |

10,000 lights adorn Lipscomb University’s 45-foot Christmas tree which made its debut Tuesday night at the second annual Lighting of the Green.

Boasting a concert with more than 300 Lipscomb students of all ages and special guest Amy Grant, the tree-lighting ceremony was the perfect way for the Lipscomb family to kick off the holiday season, even with the sporadic drizzles of rain.

Grant sang several of her Christmas classics, including “Breath of Heaven” and “Tennessee Christmas,” as well as one of her songs in a new arrangement by Lipscomb’s own Phil Sanders. Youngsters in the audience got a treat when she invited them on stage to dance during “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”

Santa Claus greeted a wealth of children and everyone enjoyed Christmas cookies and hot chocolate served by members of the Lipscomb Student Alumni Association in Victorian garb. Channel 5 meteorologist Lelan Statom added some flair to the show as the master of ceremonies.

Even after the concert, the crowd lingered on the Quad, enjoying the red, green and white lights of the Christmas tree and music by Nashville Pipe & Drum.

In addition to bringing the Lipscomb family together for the Christmas season, the Lighting of the Green provided an opportunity to donate food to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
