Former Bison coach ties Bob Knight wins record

Former men's basketball coach Don Meyer made history Saturday night when his Northern State University team defeated Upper Iowa, 63-58, in Fayette, Iowa.

Meyer tied Bob Knight for the most coaching victories in NCAA men's basketball history with 902. Meyer and Knight are the only two coaches in NCAA men's basketball history to reach the 900-win plateau. Meyer coached the Bisons for 24 years and led the team to an NAIA national championship in 1986. In 1999 Meyer was named the head coach at Northern State, an NCAA Division II program.

After leading by as many as 17 in the first half, Northern State, which is ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, had to hold on for the victory. Kevin Ratzsch had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves.

Meyer, 64, is still recovering from a car accident that occurred Sept. 5. Doctors are in the early stages of determining a course of action for the treatment of cancer discovered in the aftermath of his collision.

NSU will be back in action next weekend as the Wolves return home to host the University of Mary on Saturday. Meyer and the Wolves will be going for historic win number 903 in that game.
