A Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

 |

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision that people will take time to help each other, the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Lipscomb University hosted A Day of Service…A Day of Safety on Saturday Jan. 15.

Members of the community including the Metro Police Department, the Fire Department, local businesses and boy scouts joined Lipscomb students and employees in an effort to teach children from low-income families about safety. Sixty to seventy children participated in the Day of Safety, said Vicki Gaw, administrative assistant for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Study Abroad.

“The Day of Service is about taking time out and helping people in any way you can,” said Gaw. “Helping people is not a strain. You can do it any time.”

Pizzas, soft drinks and deserts were served for lunch, and door prizes were awarded to the children at the end of the day.  Many local businesses donated items for the door prizes so that no child went home empty handed.

This event was sponsored by the following businesses: Academy Sports & Outdoors, Bellacino’s, Bike Pedlar, Harris Teeter, Jolly Cyclist, Kroger, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Nashville Fire Department, Papa Johns, Publix, Soccer USA.
