Veterans have a new scholarship opportunity at Lipscomb University in honor of legendary musician Charlie Daniels.

Lipscomb University’s Veteran Services Center is accepting applications for the inaugural awarding of the Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes. The new scholarship is targeted to students and their dependents who are not eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon benefits.

“This is a great opportunity for veterans to offset the cost of a college education. We greatly appreciate the support and passion that Charlie Daniels has for helping veterans access a college education,” said Jim Humphrey, director of veterans services and assistant dean of students.

A total of ten scholarships will be awarded for spring semester 2013. A maximum of $2,000 may be awarded per student for the semester.

Humphrey said those who are eligible to apply for the scholarship include veteran students who are not eligible for Yellow Ribbon benefits, dependents with transferred benefits not eligible for Yellow Ribbon benefits or a traditional undergraduate student who is a veteran and is not categorized under the Adult Degree Program.

Applications are due in the Veterans Services Center located in the lower level of Bennett Campus Center by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13. Download the Current Student Application or the Freshman/Transfer Student Application. Download instructions here.

The Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes was established in March 2012 by Lipscomb University in honor of Daniels and his tireless efforts to support veterans. Each spring, Daniels lends his talent to the Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes event that features a variety of musicians and other celebrities to help raise awareness for Lipscomb University’s Yellow Ribbon Program and funds for the Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes.
