Social clubs are a unique and exciting experience at Lipscomb. While you're here, you'll meet hundreds of people and form friendships that will last a lifetime. One of the best ways to cultivate these relationships is through social clubs, and with a variety of social clubs on campus, chances are there is one that is a great fit for you. 

1. Who is eligible to join a social club? 
   • Undergraduate students who have completed at least one semester at a University and hold at least a 2.25 GPA (2.5 for freshmen), are currently enrolled full time, and are not on any type of university probation are eligible to join a social club.
2. What are social clubs? 
   • Social Clubs are local sororities and fraternities that are only affiliated with Lipscomb University. Students enjoy participating in their club’s traditions, events, and activities year-round. Social clubs are devoted to fostering Christ-like communities for all students that attend Lipscomb. 
3. Why would I join a Social Club?
   • Social Clubs are a great way to get involved at Lipscomb. Students in social clubs create close community with other club members, obtain access to more leadership experience, and work closely with philanthropic efforts each year. The Social Club system at Lipscomb will open doors to a network of students and alumni who will offer lifelong relationships and serve as a stepping stone for other opportunities, too.

Student Organizations are a great way to build leadership skills, develop socially, and make new friends who all share a similar interest. The purpose of our Student Orgs is to provide several opportunities for students to plug in to something on campus so that everyone can experience a diverse group of people who all share similar hobbies, passions, and desires.

• What is the difference in Social Clubs and Student Organizations? 
  • Social Clubs are Lipscomb’s version of fraternities and sororities. Student Organizations are groups that any student can join and that are categorized as General Interest Groups, Cultural and Affinity Groups, Ministry and Service Groups, and Sports and Recreation Groups.
• How do I get involved in a student organization?
  • Each semester, there will be multiple Student Organization Fairs that take place in the Bennett Campus Center. Students are encouraged to visit these fairs and observe all of the many opportunities to get involved with student organizations on campus.
• What if I can’t find a student organization for me?
  • You can start your own! Lipscomb has a streamlined process for creating student organizations for students who have passions and interests in areas that are not currently supported by a University-affiliated Student Organization. Check out the Student Organization Handbook under section B (Becoming a student organization) for an outline of the process.

The Lipscomb Bisons represent Lipscomb University in fifteen NCAA Division I sports including baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball and are part of the ASUN Conference. Recent successes include Women’s Volleyball winning the ASUN championship and representing our conference and university at the NCAA Tournament in Omaha, NE. 

This past year we were able to compete with limited attendance at our home games and are looking forward to having increased capacity in the fall to welcome you to the Herd!

• How much do student tickets cost?
  • We do not charge admission for Lipscomb University students, Lipscomb Academy students, faculty, nor staff members. Just show your Lipscomb ID to gain admission to all regular-season home games.

Campus Recreation includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), Intramural Sports, Group Fitness Classes, and Outdoor Adventure. We are committed to growing students’ mind, body, and spirit through the means of physical health and nutrition. Through the use of our weight room, gymnasium, functional fitness room, organized fitness classes, and intramural sports program, students can remain physically active while growing mentally and spiritually alongside peers and staff. 

• Is there a cost associated with using the facilities?
  • No! The use of the SAC, Intramural Fields, and Group Fitness classes is free for all current Lipscomb University students. Just bring your Student ID to scan at the entrance. 
• How do I participate in Group Fitness classes?
  • All students can attend any of our Group Fitness classes including but not limited to Hip Hop Fitness, HIIT, Yoga, and Spin. The schedule is posted on our website and around campus every semester. 
• Is there additional equipment I can rent?
  • Yes! It’s free for current Lipscomb to rent bikes, paddleboards, and kayaks.

  • Off-Campus students are encouraged to participate in all Lipscomb activities.  From Singarama to creating your own student organization, there is plenty to explore and enjoy! • Where do new students reside?
  • Freshman females are assigned to Elam Hall and Fanning Hall, Freshman males are assigned to High Rise, Transfer females are assigned to Fanning Hall, Johnson Hall and Bison Hall and Transfer males are assigned to Sewell Hall and High Rise. Transfer students will be placed with other transfer students or returning students. These are all general assignments and can change at the discretion of Housing and Residence Life. 
• How do I find a roommate?
  • Join the "I'm Coming to Lipscomb in 2021" or "I'm Transferring to Lipscomb in 2021" Facebook pages or meeting other students at your New Student Orientation session. If you have a roommate in mind, please insert their L# on your housing profile before July 20th. If you have not entered a preferred roommate by July 20th, you will be assigned with another student based upon your housing profile.
• Where do I find my housing assignment and roommate information?
  • This can be seen by logging into the Lipscomb Housing Portal at housing.lipscomb.edu. Your housing assignment will be at the bottom of the page and will be available the first week of August. If you click on the assignment, it will give you your roommate’s name. When assignments are announced, you will receive an email from your Residence Hall Director to sign up for a move-in day time.

Student Activities Board (SAB) is a student-led programming organization responsible for planning, coordinating, organizing, and hosting various social opportunities on and off campus that are inclusive and welcoming to the entire Lipscomb community.

• How does someone get involved in SAB?
  • Applications will be opened early in the spring for SAB paid positions, and another application will open up for SAB volunteer positions at the beginning of the Fall Semester.
• What are some events SAB puts on?
  • Some staple events SAB puts on are dodgeball, trivia nights, square days, swing/salsa in the square.
• Are SAB events free?
  • Typically, SAB provides free events to Lipscomb students. There are very few times an event hosted by SAB will have a cost to the student.

• What is the Lipscomb Mentoring Network? 
  • The Lipscomb Mentoring Network (LMN) provides an opportunity for freshmen to connect with volunteer mentors in order to ease the transition into the Lipscomb community. Mentoring builds relationships and helps make Lipscomb and Nashville feel a bit smaller. Each freshman connects with a Faculty/Staff Mentor, a Peer Mentor, who is an upperclassmen student, and a Community Mentor, who is a member of the surrounding Nashville community. • Why do we participate in chapel? 
  • Chapel facilitates a strong sense of community and invites all of campus — faculty, staff, and students — into a shared communal rhythm. Chapel is meant to help students connect with the community in meaningful, enriching, and intentionally formative ways. We do this by participating in the campus-wide Gathering on Tuesday mornings and by connecting with small, consistent groups that meet weekly. (We provide several dozen options of groups to choose from!)
• What does it mean to be spiritually formed, and why is it important to my college experience? 
  • We are all spiritual beings, yet we rarely spend time developing our inner life. The specific goal of Christian spiritual formation at Lipscomb is to take the form of Jesus, to become like Jesus in all aspects of life. The Spiritual Formation Team creates opportunities for students to intentionally engage their faith journeys — regardless of our religious affiliations — so that we may better love God, others, ourselves, and creation. SGA exists to give the student a voice in what happens at Lipscomb. The SGA helps sustain the spirit and morale of students, serves as an advocate for the concerns of students, and serves as a catalyst for student academic, social, and spiritual growth, while promoting the Christian values and principles of the university.

The students on SGA work with the faculty and staff of Lipscomb to enhance the student experience. The diverse body of members on SGA ensure a communication link between the student body and the university administration and help promote and decide what activities and changes happen on campus.

Membership for SGA is open to all dedicated and responsible students who have a desire for involvement and personal growth. There are 4 Executive Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes have 7 total senators per class. Each class as a President, Vice President, Coordinator and 4 additional At-Large senators. The Freshman class is represented by the Freshman Leadership Council (FLC) which is by the Executive Officers at the beginning of each Fall semester. 

• How do I get involved in SGA?
  • There are 7 Freshman Senator positions available each year, which are filled by an application process with the SGA Executive Officers. If you’re interested in being a part of the Freshman Leadership Council, please apply here.
• How do you make a proposal for funding from SGA?
  • The SGA hears student funding proposals at our Senate Meetings. To submit a proposal, visit our website and fill out the Google Doc with your information. 
• What is the time commitment for serving on SGA?
  • Serving on SGA requires attending weekly meetings, held Monday nights at 7:00 pm. In addition, your specific committee may have additional work to do outside of your regular meeting time. In total, the weekly time commitment tends to be under three hours.

Lipscomb University’s Global Programs represent some of the most unique travel and learning opportunities around. You can take courses in other countries related to your major (or interest), ranging from a couple of weeks to an entire semester. You’ll be with a group of fellow Lipscomb students and faculty meeting new people, exploring interesting places and learning about cultures different from your own, all while acquiring a sense of global knowledge and experience that will help you not only when you’re back on campus, but after you graduate and are making your own path in the world.

• When should I study abroad?
  • For semester-long programs, we recommend that students study abroad during their sophomore year. This is because we believe it is important for students to get acquainted with campus life during their freshman year, and students are required to take most of their major courses during their junior and senior years. Apprentice trips run during summer and winter breaks, and students of all classifications are encouraged to apply.
• How much does studying abroad cost?
  • Semester-long programs: The cost is the same as living on campus (tuition, room & board) plus a program fee. For the upcoming school year, the program fee is about $3900. 
  • Short-term programs: The cost varies based on duration and location. Program fees range anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand.
• When should I apply for study abroad?
  • Because of the high demand for our programs, we recommend that students apply about a year prior to the semester they want to study abroad. For short-term programs, students should apply several months prior to trip departure.

Lipscomb University is committed to the idea that academic advising is a viable and integral component of the educational process.  To that end, our faculty are an integral part of our advising structure, with most full-time faculty serving as advisors for students within their academic department.  For our “deciding/exploratory” students, staff members who are familiar with student development and retention serve as advisors until the point of major declaration.

We desire for advising to be more than a passing on of factual information and construction of semester schedules.  As students move through their academic program, it is our desire that they develop a mentoring relationship with the faculty in their discipline, particularly their advisor.  We hope our students will see their advisor as someone to whom they can turn with questions not only about what classes they need in a given semester, but to seek answers to questions about their vocation, calling, and life direction.

• Who will my advisor be?
  • Likely a faculty member in the department of your discipline/major.  In some cases (depending on department), you will have the same advisor from your first semester until you graduate.  In other departments certain faculty members focus on working with freshmen, and you will be moved to a “major” advisor once you formally declare your major.
• When do I meet with my advisor?
  • There are two formal “advising periods” each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. These are typically scheduled two weeks before pre-registration for the following semester, and are designed as times for students to schedule a brief session with advisors to review proposed class schedules.  However, these are not intended to be the only times that students can meet with their advisor. Faculty maintain office hours each week, and students are encouraged to schedule office visits when they feel the need to do so.
• Can I request a different advisor?
  • Yes, a student may do that.  If a student changes their major/academic interest, a new advisor in the new area will be assigned.  If a student desires a change within their current area, he/she needs to talk with the department chair about making that change.

The Honors College seeks to provide superior students with unique opportunities for intellectual challenge and growth. Classes are kept small in order that students and faculty members may exchange ideas in a format conducive to free discussion. Professors are chosen for their ability to inspire bright students to think and work independently and creatively, to develop intellectual curiosity, to express their ideas clearly and logically, and to respect the ideas of others. The college also encourages students to develop significant research interests and provides them with outlets on campus and at state and regional conferences to share their research with other students and faculty. • Will the honors college ruin my GPA or delay my graduation? 
  • The average GPA of honors college graduates is 3.75, and they graduate in four years at a rate 25 percentage points higher than the university. Some graduate a semester early, and a few graduate after three years. 
• Is honors like AP or IB, requiring a lot more reading/papers/tests? 
  • No. Honors courses are differently designed, and they do not pile on more work. Most involve lots of student-directed learning and discussion.

Through our globally-focused curriculum and experiential learning, you will not only develop respectful attentiveness to diversity, but also increase your understanding of cultural practices, systems, and institutional structures. Embedded in our General Education curriculum are two of the most impactful courses of the entire LIGHT Program: Lipscomb Experience and Engagements. • What's the difference between LIGHT and Global Learning?
  • We're not the same, but, much like SALT, we have things in common. LIGHT does not send you overseas for educational purposes, but we think it's a great idea. We are an academic initiative and help faculty incorporate intercultural knowledge into their coursework. Sometimes that knowledge comes from down the street. We also bring the Common Read speaker to campus, who will always be someone whose work is intercultural in its focus.
• What's the difference between LIGHT and SALT?
  • The main difference is that SALT is service-learning, and we are intercultural education. Our work tends to overlap, but the goals are different. LIGHT is about showing you a more well-rounded approach to a discipline--bringing in all relevant voices whenever possible, which means that for many students, LIGHT courses expose them to people and ideas they didn't know were part of their disciplines.
• Why is this important to my experience at Lipscomb?
  • Lipscomb’s identity as a Christian institution makes this a key part of your time here. Neighboring is a major part of Christianity. It's important to practice cultural humility and learn about people from authoritative sources (like the people themselves) rather than rely on cultural ideas of who they might be. Without understanding and empathy, we are not very effective in reaching out to people. From a career perspective, you're much more marketable in the 21st century with real knowledge of the rest of the world.

The Lipscomb Campus Store, often referred to as the bookstore, provides course materials for current students as well as official Lipscomb University apparel and gifts. They also sell Lipscomb gear off-site at campus sporting and seasonal events. They continue to service university academic departments and conferences by selling keynote speakers and topical books as well.

• How do textbooks work? 
  • Our program, called Slingshot Choice, is an auto fulfillment service offered at the campus store. You choose your preference (new, used, or digital) and Slingshot Choice automatically fulfills and delivers all of your required course materials directly to you before classes start and charges them to your student account. Commuters can pick up their orders in-store while campus resident orders are delivered to their dorm rooms. Students in Slingshot Choice have an extended full refund policy on any books they don’t want to keep through the first week of classes. All new Lipscomb students are automatically enrolled in this service and may choose to opt out at any time. This service continues each semester until a student opts out. *Note: This service does not cover summer courses.*
• How much should I budget for my textbooks each semester? 
  • A textbook budget depends on your declared major, enrolled courses and the materials your professors choose to require.  Science, business, mathematics and finance textbooks will cost much more than art or English textbooks. A semester’s worth of materials can cost anywhere from $100 to $800. A textbook list for the semester and prices can be found on our website (prices may fluctuate daily). Contact the store for assistance if needed.
• What kind of other products do they have available? 
  • The Campus Store sells Lipscomb sweatshirts, t-shirts, drinkware, hats, blankets, youth and infant apparel, gift items - you name it!  They also have gift cards available for the campus store. Most of the in-store selection can be found on their website.

  • We offer 5 month, 4 month or 3 month payment plans for fall and spring terms and a 2 month plan for summer term. All payment plans have an enrollment fee of $60 and payments draft automatically each month on the 25th. You must re-enroll each term that you want to use a payment plan as your form of payment.

  • Most students start internships sometime in their sophomore year. Your academic standing and major also influence when you can begin internships. • What available transportation systems are there in Nashville?
  • Lipscomb University student IDs serve as a bus pass at no additional cost to the student. The WeGo bus is accessible at the northwest corner of campus by the softball field. 
  • Uber, Lyft, and Earthrides are also rideshare services available at their respective rates.
  • The Office of International Student Services provides rides at no cost once per week to the Green Hills Mall, Krogrer, and Walgreens Pharmacy. This information is sent out to students on a weekly basis for reservations.

• What are the clinic’s hours and fees? 
  • We are open Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm when classes are in session and are closed for lunch from 12:30pm-1:00pm.  Clinic hours may be expanded during the academic year if increased demand and patient volume.  Summer hours may vary. There is a fee for services starting around $10.  Please call for detailed information regarding cost and hours. Services may be limited or interrupted due to campus management of illnesses such as COVID-19.
• What services do you offer at the clinic?  
  • We have a nurse practitioner available to order point of care testing (flu, strep and mono, etc.), diagnose and prescribe medications as needed.  We offer physicals, travel consults, acute illness and injury care.  We have medical equipment (crutches, boots, slings, etc.) available for loan and purchase.  Health services is available for health advice on smoking, nutrition, allergy prevention and more!

  • Most students prefer to make appointments online. An appointment request can be found at www.lipscomb.edu/counselingcenter or on your myLipscomb page under Resources. The Intake/Triage Counselor will reach out as soon as possible once receiving the request to set up the intake session. Walk-in appointments are accepted during regular business hours for students in crisis.
• How long do sessions last and how often do we meet?
  • Each session is 50 minutes. Most times clients attend weekly, but sessions are on an as-needed basis. The counseling center is located on the 2nd floor of the SAC (Student Activities Center). Our office hours are Monday- Friday from 8:00 am- 5:00 pm. 
• Who will know I am attending counseling?
  • The University Counseling Center adheres to very strict confidentiality standards as outlined by the ACA and AAMFT Codes of Ethics. Any information provided is strictly confidential (exceptions required of all counseling professionals include a legal subpoena, life-threatening situations, and cases of suspected child or dependent adult abuse). Counseling records are not part of the educational record. Only counseling center personnel have access to student’s counseling records. If contacted, the counseling center cannot give out any information, or even confirm that a person is receiving counseling, unless a written authorization to release information signed by the client is on file.

The Financial Aid Office is here to help navigate your financial needs from admission to graduation. The Financial Aid Team works to help you receive and maintain scholarships as well as process and receive federal and state student aid.  The team works to be sure that you and the school remain in compliance with federal and state regulations, helping you to complete your degree as well as set you up for success in the future.  Most Financial Aid processes begin with completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year.  Financial Aid Awards are available online including renewal criteria and aid policies.  The Financial Aid Office looks to partner with students to help them reach their education goals.

Lipscomb’s Department of Security is a 24/7/365 operation dedicated to maintaining a safe environment on Lipscomb’s campuses. Crime prevention through active patrol, emergency response, community training, special events security management, vehicle assistance, and Bison Walk safety escorts, are only a few of the services offered through this department. Our officers are highly trained, most with prior law enforcement and/or military experience, and seek to provide a positive experience for students, employees, and guests to our campus. 

• Do you offer a safety escort and, if so, how can I use that service? 
  • Yes, the Lipscomb Department of Security offers the Bison Walk. If you would like someone to escort you from your dorm to your vehicle, from class back to your dorm, or anywhere else on campus, just call our 24-hour Dispatch Center at 615-966-7600, and one of our officers will come to your location. Also, if you have parked at one of our satellite parking areas (Stokes or the Academy Football Field), one of our officers will be happy to give you a ride in a patrol vehicle to where you parked. This service is available 24/7/365, and everyone is encouraged to use it anytime they would like. We also encourage everyone to download the Lipscomb Ready app for their smartphone. Along with many great resources, the Lipscomb Ready app provides the ability to use a virtual Bison Walk. This can be helpful when off of Lipscomb’s campus, and we are happy to talk one-on-one with anyone who wants to know more about how this app works.
• How do I get my ID/register my vehicle? 
  • Lipscomb ID cards and vehicle parking decals can be ordered online through myLipscomb, and picked up at our dispatch window in the basement of Beaman Library. The entire process can also be completed at the dispatch window, if online access is not possible for the student. For in-person vehicle registration, please bring your state-issued driver’s license, as well as your state-issued vehicle registration, and one of our personnel can assist you with completing this very quick process. For in-person ID cards, please bring your state issued photo-identification, and one of our personnel will assist you.
• Who do I call if I need help? 
  • You can always reach one of our officers at 615-966-7600. Our Communications Center is open 24 hours a day, and we are happy to assist you however we can, and to point you toward the right person if we are unable to help directly. • What happens if I change my schedule after I submit a Certification Request Form to Veteran Services? 
  • If you make changes to your schedule after having submitted a signed copy for processing, you will need to immediately inform the Veteran Services Office and submit an updated form. Dropping a course may require you to repay the VA for a portion or the entire class. If you have questions about repaying for dropped classes, please contact the Veteran Services Office prior to dropping a course.

  • Students are allocated a print quota that equates to 600 monochrome pages per semester (see printing.lipscomb.edu) for printing on campus printers.  Monochrome printers are available in most academic buildings and in the lobby of each residence hall.  A color printer is available in the Library, but color prints charge at a higher rate that equates to 10 monochrome prints per page.

On-Campus Employment at Lipscomb University provides students with the opportunity for financial support, work experience and professional connections while they are pursuing their academic goals. The job duties and responsibilities of student employees vary greatly, and may or may not be related to the student’s field of study. Students are limited to 20 hours of work per week even if multiple student jobs are held.
