Biography
Jean Miller’s first foray into operatic performance was singing the role of Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors at Pepperdine University. Coming to Lipscomb in 1979, she not only taught private voice, but also performed as a regular soloist for Lipscomb’s Early Music Consort and later Nashville Early Music Ensemble, both under the direction of Dr. Gerald Moore. She has appeared as a recitalist numerous times on Lipscomb’s Faculty and Friends series, as a soloist in Fauré’s Requiem at Woodmont Hills Church, on Lipscomb’s presentations of Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise, and in the oratorio Women of Valor by Andrea Clearfield at the Christian Scholars’ Conference. Her eclectic musical interests range from singing as a session musician to directing over 25 musical plays, including premiering a children’s musical composed by Janet McMahan, and music directing Lipscomb’s main stage production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The 2026–27 season marks her 16th year singing with and on occasion coaching diction for the Nashville Symphony Chorus.
With flute as her secondary instrument, and with the impetus of providing music education for the home school community in Middle Tennessee, Jean founded and for 13 years directed Nashville Notes, a concert band for home educated students, several of whom have gone on to become professional musicians in symphony orchestras and military bands. Her Lipscomb voice students have competed up to national levels with the National Association of Teachers of Singing as well as becoming opera singers, choral directors, music teachers, and worship leaders around the country. As an ambassador for Lipscomb, Jean regularly teaches vocal technique seminars and serves as a guest clinician with regional churches and schools.
