Dr. Aaron Howard, Assistant Professor in Lipscomb's College of Bible & Ministry and College of the Entertainment & the Arts

In this episode, Dr. Aaron Howard, Lipscomb’s Assistant Professor of Ethics and Reconciliation, shares his unique journey, passion for ministry and how those two realities remain relevant to his background, academic endeavors, and spiritual life. From his beginnings as a third-grade teacher in Los Angeles to earning a PhD at Vanderbilt, Dr. Howard’s path has been shaped by a desire to combine deep theological understanding with practical impact.

As a valued member of the Lipscomb faculty, Dr. Howard brings a wealth of versatility to his engagement with our students, ranging from classes on Multicultural Worship to leading the university Gospel choir. His aim is to guide students through complex ethical issues that permeate our politically charged culture. He emphasizes Lipscomb’s distinctive approach to theological education—rigorous yet deeply rooted in faith. It’s a refreshing perspective that stands out in a field where faith formation is often sidelined by academic critique.

Dr. Howard takes a similar approach when directing the Gospel choir. He describes his musical students as more than just a group of singers, despite their dedicated work ethic. The Gospel Choir is a space where students not only develop their musical talents but also support one another through prayer, fasting, and mentorship. He has played a vital role in creating a rich environment for spiritual growth and fellowship among our students. This sense of community has made the Gospel Choir a cornerstone of campus life and has garnered attention far beyond the university, with videos of their performances resonating with audiences across the country.

Looking ahead, he envisions taking the Gospel Choir’s message of unity and hope on the road, expanding their reach both nationally and—if the opportunity arises—even internationally. It’s a bold vision, but one that’s grounded in his belief that music can be a powerful tool for bringing people together. For Dr. Howard, every performance, every class, and every conversation is an opportunity to live out the Gospel and inspire others to do the same. Lipscomb is fortunate to have such a dedicated faculty member who brings both academic depth and a passion for ministry, serving as a mentor and leader to students eager to integrate their faith with their professional and personal lives.

Dr. Howard’s commitment to unity and reconciliation is rooted in his own experiences growing up in Los Angeles during the racially contentious 80s and 90s. These formative years shaped his understanding of the deep divisions in American society and the Church’s call to provide healing to that brokenness. He believes that true reconciliation is possible only through Christ and sees the Gospel Choir as a microcosm of the church’s potential to reflect God’s diverse kingdom.

“This is an ancient problem: what our calling has always been as God’s people in a broken world is to show what it means to be reconciled through the blood of Christ Jesus.” — Dr. Aaron Howard
