U.S. News ranks Lipscomb in Top 25

Lipscomb University is ranked 25th among master’s degree institutions in the South, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2008” guidebook, which went on sale in August.

Lipscomb is one of 119 institutions in the master's category. The university moved up from 28th last year, and this year marks 14 consecutive years that Lipscomb has been listed in the top tier of “Best Universities – Master’s” institutions.

“Although it is impossible to quantify the true value of any university, we are pleased that Lipscomb has continued its steady climb in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. Given the many changes we have undertaken in the past 18 months – from establishing new programs and hiring new faculty to new construction – we expect even greater improvement in the coming years,” said Lipscomb University President Randy Lowry.

Since last year, Lipscomb has boosted its scores in three of the U.S. News criteria:

  • The university has increased the number of small classes offered for only 20 students or less to 54 percent;
  • Lipscomb increased its selectivity in student admissions, accepting only 74 percent of applicants last year; and
  • The university increased its average graduation rate to 54 percent.

“This improvement in our ranking is a direct reflection of the hard work of our faculty and staff and administration,” Lowry said. “In just the last year we have added seven new graduate programs, four undergraduate programs, emphasized global engagement among our students and refined our spiritual formation experiences to make them more meaningful. We have embarked on an aggressive program of facility additions and renovations to support these programs with the best technology and methodologies.

“All of these improvements are designed to respond to identified needs in the education marketplace and to serve our students with the highest-quality experience to prepare them for a lifetime of leadership and service,” Lowry said.

Lipscomb University is a Christian community of scholars dedicated to learning, leading and serving, preparing students for excellence in leadership and service today, tomorrow and forever.

Students can earn a bachelor’s degree in 90 fields of study and several pre-professional programs. Lipscomb offers 22 fields of study at the master’s level, a doctoral degree in pharmacy as of fall 2008 and an accelerated adult degree program for those who wish to complete their undergraduate degrees in the evening.
