Lipscomb to host the United States Army Aviation "Silver Wings" Band, April 10

Lipscomb University is set to host the United States Army Aviation “Silver Wings” Band, 98th Army Band of Fort Rucker, Ala. on Monday, April 10 at 8 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium on the university’s campus, 3901 Granny White Pike, Nashville .

The “Silver Wings” Band will be performing songs such as “America the Beautiful,” “US Anthem,” “Fanfare” from “La Peri,” “Killer Tango,” “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and more. The event is free and open to the public.  Everyone is invited to attend.

The “Silver Wings” Band’s primary mission is to promote and enhance the morale and esprit de corps of the military through participation in official ceremonies, formal concerts, and ceremonial events.  They also provide buglers at funerals for their veterans’ families in the southeastern region, promote recruiting and public relations, and represent United States Army at local and national activities, according to the band.  

Chief Warrant Officer Three Stephen L. Campbell, commander of the 98th Army Band, has been the bandmaster since August 2004.  In 1983 Campbell started his Army career by becoming a member of the 399th U.S. Army Band, Ft. Leonard, Mo.   In 1993 he was assigned leader of the clarinet section in the Eighth U.S. Army Band in Seoul .  Shortly after becoming part of the band, he was accepted to be the Army Bandmaster after auditioning.  In 2004, Campbell was assigned the 98th Army Band. 

The Concert Band is the main ensemble of the “Silver Wings” Band.  It includes traditional and contemporary band literature, overtures, orchestral transcriptions, marches, popular tunes, and patriotic music.  The Concert Band has visited many cities and towns located in the southeastern part of the .  They primarily perform at musical festivals, clinics, high school and colleges.  The Band also allows opportunity for students to participate in an instrumental clinic while they are visiting the location.  Along with the Concert Band, the two other bands, Dixieland Band and Brass Quintet, are included in the “Silver Wings” Band.  The Dixieland Band plays sounds of New Orleans jazz to students of all ages at outdoor activities and festivals.  The Brass Quintet’s music is very diverse with classics of Bach to contemporary jazz.
