Improve and enhance your wellbeing
The University Counseling Center (UCC) works to support the development of and enhance the wellbeing of students through quality clinical services, crisis intervention, preventative mental health initiatives and access to community resources. The UCC accomplishes this mission by providing services and resources that respect the privacy, dignity and diverse backgrounds of each individual. All UCC services are free of charge and available to currently enrolled Lipscomb University students only.

Prepare for your first visit
If you have never been to a counseling session, the prospect of setting your first appointment may be intimidating or overwhelming. It’s completely normal to feel that way. Rest assured our first priority is to make you feel relaxed, comfortable and welcomed. At the end of the initial meeting, you and your counselor will determine the best next course of action.
FAQ
We want to ensure you have the level of care you need. You may benefit from services that extend beyond the short-term model offered at the UCC. In these cases, a referral may be made after an initial meeting, or as these factors become more apparent during the course of working with a UCC clinician.
Some of the issues that are commonly addressed through referral to community providers include:
- When an individual requests, or may benefit from, being seen more than once a week
- When an individual desires, or may benefit from, uninterrupted, long-term therapy with the same counselor
- Some complex and/or chronic mental health conditions
- Presence of significant drug and/or alcohol problems
- Presence of significant eating disorders
- Psychological evaluations and/or testing
- To obtain documentation for ADA accommodations
- To provide testimony or evidence in legal matters
Referrals may be made at any point, even once counseling at the UCC has begun.
Individual counseling typically occurs weekly, for 50-60 min, but can be less frequent according to need. The UCC is a training center for the graduate counseling master’s program. The center generally supervises 20-30 counseling interns and post-graduate counselors who provide most of the individual counseling to the campus at large. The counseling interns are supervised by Ashley Dumas (Director) and Jeremy King (Clinical Supervisor) throughout each semester.

Want to talk to someone, but unsure about counseling?
Let’s Talk is a program that provides easy access to informal conversations with a UCC counselor. In these conversations, the counselor can offer support, perspective, and suggestions for resources.
Let’s Talk is not considered nor is it a substitute for traditional therapy.
How is Let’s Talk different from a regular counseling session at the UCC?
- It’s a brief conversation (approximately 15 minutes).
- No appointment is necessary.
- You will be discussing a specific topic that does not necessarily require weekly follow-up
Who should consider a Let’s Talk conversation?
- Students who are not interested in ongoing counseling but would like the perspective of a counselor.
- Students who have a specific problem and would like some quick tips to help manage.
- Students who have a concern about a friend and want some thoughts about what to do.
Are Let’s Talk conversations confidential?
- Conversations with Let’s Talk counselors are confidential, with a few, very rare exceptions. Counselors may need to share information in an emergency when there is an immediate threat of harm to self or others. Counselors are required by law to report when a minor or dependent adult is being abused. If you have further questions about confidentiality, we encourage you to discuss them with a Let’s Talk counselor.
Where can I find Let’s Talk locations and times?
- Let’s Talk locations and times vary each semester. Current information is posted in Have You Heard.
I think I may be a better fit for regular counseling- where do I start?
- Instructions for scheduling an appointment online and further information about the services and support the UCC offers can be found on the counseling center webpage
The Let’s Talk program at Lipscomb University is based in part on the Let’s Talk program at Cornell University.
