Dr. George Goldman, Professor in Lipscomb's College of Bible & Ministry
Dr. George Goldman’s journey into biblical studies and teaching at Lipscomb University is marked by deep academic commitment and passion for scripture. Growing up as the son of a preacher, he explored various interests, but a challenge from a senior student claiming Biblical Languages was the hardest major on campus sparked his initial curiosity. As his passion for Greek developed, he was led to graduate studies at Trinity Divinity School and eventually back to Lipscomb as a professor. His path reflects both his intellectual curiosity and dedication to theological education.
Over the years, Dr. Goldman has worn numerous hats at Lipscomb, including serving as an administrator, but his heart has always been drawn to the classroom. He finds joy in engaging students in deep theological conversation, challenging their perspectives, and especially learning from their insights. Today’s episode also covers the importance of understanding scripture in its historical and cultural context, particularly in his teaching of Greek. Dr. Goldman discusses how slowing down to read the Bible in its original language helps uncover new meanings and brings clarity to polarizing passages.
In fact, he is currently working on a book inspired by his understanding of Luke’s Gospel. Rather than a traditional commentary, the work will explore key themes that emerge for students in his Story of Jesus class, such as the nature of the Gospel, wealth and possessions, and ethical questions surrounding violence. His study has deepened his conviction that the Gospel is about more than individual salvation—it’s about how we live and engage with the world today as followers of Christ.
Dr. Goldman also sees a shift in students’ faith journeys in comparison to those during his own upbringing. While he notes that previous generations may have known the Bible better, today’s students are deeply spiritual and eager to make a difference in the world. Many are exploring careers in ministry and nonprofit work beyond traditional church roles. His goal is to help students see how scripture informs all areas of life, from business to social justice. Through his teaching, Dr. Goldman encourages them to ask hard questions, understand Jesus in his historical context, and ultimately live out the Gospel in practical ways.
