Green Home Tour, Oct. 8-9, features the home of director of Institute for Sustainable Practice

The home of Dodd Galbreath, director of the Lipscomb Institute for Sustainable Practice, will be one of 12 included on the 2011 Green Homes Tour, Oct. 8-9, coordinated by the Cumberland River Compact and the Middle Tennessee chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Located near campus at 801 Lealand Court, Galbreath’s 4,000-square-foot home is retrofitted with various green features including:
-- Native landscaping and small edible landscape;
-- Rain gardens;
-- A 3.89 kilowatt solar photovoltaics system with up to 7 kilowatt capacity;
-- Programmable thermostats;
-- LED lights and Energy Star appliances;
-- Natural gas heating, recirculating pump and tankless gas water heater; and
-- Motion detector light switches in children’s area of the house.
Galbreath and his wife Susan, also a Lipscomb administrator, knew the benefits of making these home improvements and chose to lead by example to further the culture of sustainability in Nashville. For example, the Galbreaths use a hand lawn mower and practice composting at their home.
Since making these improvements, they have enjoyed reduced water and electric bills, instant hot water and a reduction by half of lawn maintenance.
