Music
At Lipscomb Academy, music is a door that can open your child’s eyes to the world around them, to see the world differently, to think creatively, or critically, to be part of a team and to solve problems or tackle challenges.
Music can boost students’ achievement and innovative thinking, regardless of where their natural talents lie. No matter your child’s background, our goal is to teach students to enjoy and appreciate music and the act of creating music.
At all grade levels, your child will receive basic instruction to realize their artistic potential. Elementary-age students are given an active, hands-on experience that uses the voice, movement and playing instruments as teaching tools. The music curriculum, using the Orff method and instruments, is designed to relate to other academic subject areas, helping your child to make connections between making music and other areas of study.
As your children progress through middle school, they will enjoy more elective choices in the arts. Strings class begins in 5th grade; band begins in the 6th grade; and chorus is offered to every child in the middle school grade levels. In addition, students explore the arts through exploratory classes with guitar, keyboards, drumming and songwriting, use of technology for music-making and field trips to enhance their classroom instruction.
High school-age teens have more opportunities to participate in music ensembles, including concert band, pep band, strings ensemble and chorale and concert choruses. Through the academy’s partnership with Lipscomb University, advanced music students have the opportunity in their senior year to take University Music Fundamentals and Theory I just across campus at the university. University professors frequently engage with academy music faculty to provide your student with university-level musical instruction both in the classroom and in private lessons through the academy’s Music Academy. In addition to our own Acuff Chapel, ensembles perform in a variety of venues, both at the university and in the community (including the historic Ryman Auditorium, original home of the Grand Ole’ Opry).
