Family Weekend provides parents a taste of college life

The Tau Phi Cowboy Show, Pancakes with the President and Civil War site tours are all activities during Family Weekend

Family Weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, is the best event each year for parents to personally get to know the faculty and administrators influencing their children’s lives as well as to get a taste of college life in Nashville.

This year, Lipscomb University is celebrating a milestone birthday. With 125 years completed as of Oct. 5, Lipscomb wants more parents than ever before to come visit campus and experience its academic community during this year’s event.

Family Weekend will offer a full lineup of entertainment and engaging events including an outdoor concert by Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, a tour of Nashville’s Civil War sites, a family hiking excursion, the Tau Phi Cowboy Show and various opportunities for parents to experience student’s daily lives including open dorms, an introduction to the Career Development Center, Campus Ministry and the deans of student life, and an annual favorite, Pancakes with the President.

Headlining the weekend is New York Times Bestseller, Hal Runkel, a licensed marriage and family therapist and founder of ScreamFree Living Inc. Runkel will present insights from his new book, Choose Your Own Adulthood: The Small Choices that Make a Big Difference, as well as provide a road map to help students and their families navigate the small choices in life that have the biggest impact.

“Family Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for parents to reconnect with their student and create new memories together, participate in fun activities, and meet other Lipscomb families,” said Sonja Hayes, parents program director. “It's also a great time to meet some of the students’ professors, as well as the staff who take pride in serving them each day. It's just a great time to be on campus, as a family.”

In addition to the Family Weekend events, there will be plenty of art, theater and athletics events going on during this weekend, providing plenty of on-campus and off-campus entertainment options for students and their families. In addition, families can get their fall flu shots at the Fight the Flu in the U flu shot clinic outside of Burton Health Sciences Center on Saturday, Oct. 1, at noon to 2 p.m.

Coordinators have worked diligently to provide programs without fees, discounted dining fees and bus transportation, Hayes said. Families should register below for each event they plan to attend, even if there is no cost associated with the event.
